This past year, we’ve recognized some incredible milestones. We’ve also recognized some incredible people and partnerships. Although we work to make extraordinary ordinary, we are still considerate of the extraordinary achievements that we witness every day.
Notable people
Tom Yackel, M.D., M.P.H., M.S. was appointed president of MCV Physicians, the faculty practice plan of VCU Health. He also will serve as senior associate dean for clinical affairs in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
Elias Neujahr was named the first CEO of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. Neujahr joined CHoR from CHRISTUS Health System where he served as president of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
Greg Hundley, M.D. joined VCU Health Pauley Heart Center as its inaugural director. Among his achievements, he has more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and $24 million in NIH grants, and 19 years of continuous NIH funding to his name.
A. Gordon Smith, M.D., F.A.A.N. was appointed as professor and chair of the Department of Neurology in the School of Medicine. He most recently served as professor of neurology and vice chair for research at the University of Utah.
Susan Steagall was named chief information officer of VCU Health System. Steagall comes to VCU Health from Novant Health in Charlotte, N.C., where she had served as vice president of application delivery services since 2011.
Notable partnerships
Thoracic surgery practice
We’ve partnered with Bon Secours to establish a thoracic surgery practice at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. This new practice will provide high-quality, comprehensive thoracic surgery and care to the Richmond metro area and beyond.
GRTC Pulse
We’ve partnered with Bon Secours Health System to secure joint sponsorship rights of GRTC Pulse, Richmond’s high-capacity rapid transit system. Together, we’re addressing social conditions that impact health within the Greater Richmond community, one of which is transportation.
East End project
We are teaming with community partners to develop a health education and wellness center that will serve residents of Richmond’s East End. More than 15 of our academic and clinical units have signed up to offer services and programming, making it an interprofessional training ground for students and faculty.
Sheltering Arms Rehab Institute
We’ve partnered with Sheltering Arms to create a multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art destination hospital focused on caring for individuals who have survived strokes, spinal cord injuries or brain injuries, as well as those in need of general rehabilitation or various neurological diseases and disorders.
You Can Control Asthma Now (UCAN) program
Kohl’s is continuing its support of our Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU with a $250,000 grant to the You Can Control Asthma Now (UCAN) program. The community asthma program provides medical care, social support and patient education to help affected children live active, healthy lives.
